Sleeping Practices with Your Baby

Many mothers get heated over this issue:  where will the new baby sleep?  I’ve done a lot of research and it seems both camps have very strong opinions as to which is right.  The only answer I conclude is to choose the method that works best (and safely) for your family. 

I don’t want to get into a flame war with anyone, so I’m going to present both sides of the issue. 

Pros of Co-sleeping:

• very much pushed as part of Attachment Parenting
• can be easier for breastfeeding.  Your baby is right there, so you don’t have to go to another room in the house in the middle of the night.  It can make it easier for on-demand feedings.
• It’s possible your baby may sleep better in the family bed with you next to them
• Peace of mind to be able to hear your baby in your room, right next to you.
• Can make traveling easier
• bonding experience for parents and baby
• cheap…you don’t have to buy an expensive crib

Cons of Co-Sleeping:

• if your bedroom is not set-up adequately (sleeping position, mattress, bedding, etc), you could increase your baby’s chances of suffocation and strangulation.  Co-sleeping MUST be done properly.  We’ll talk about that more in a separate post. 
• your bedding options, because of the risks to the baby, are limited.  You have to be careful what blankets are used, what pillows you use, etc)
• on-demand feeding may not be your cup of tea.  You may yearn for a bit of privacy in this new world you’ve entered where you’re constantly sharing your body
• you may fear a loss of intimacy with your significant other
• you may be unable to sleep with the baby in the room
• your baby may have a difficult time transitioning later on into his/her own crib/room
• you cannot use drugs, alcohol, or smoke if your baby is sleeping in your room

Pros of Crib-Sleeping

• less risk of suffocation or SIDS (if baby is sleeping in the proper position).  Now, this can be true of co-sleeping too if co-sleeping is done properly, so this point is debateable.
• privacy for the parents
• your baby gets used to sleeping in his/her own bed, so there won’t be a problem transitioning later
• everyone may sleep better this way

Cons of Crib-Sleeping

• can’t have that family bond sleeping together
• makes breastfeeding more difficult
• your baby may be more fussy
• you may not have the room for a crib

Some people try a hybrid of both:  baby sleeping in a bassinet or co-sleeper next to the parents’ bed for the first several months, and then transitioning to their own bed.

Other people choose one or the other.
